Paint Formulation for Beginners, Ep.11| Pigments & Extenders:Color, Hiding, and the Unsung Bulk Work
A batch comes back from QC: "doesn't hide well." The new tech's first instinct is to dump in more titanium dioxide. That's the formulation equivalent of yelling louder at someone who doesn't speak your language. This episode covers the two ingredients that decide what a coating looks like and a big chunk of what it costs: pigments, and the extenders that work alongside them. We get into color vs. functional pigments, organic vs. inorganic, why piling on pigment can actually make hiding worse, why TiO2 is the one pigment worth knowing cold, and the rub-out test for checking dispersion. Then we clear up the biggest reputation problem in the can. Extenders get called "cheap filler," and that's about as fair as calling an offensive line "just guys standing there." Two worked troubleshooting examples, a hiding complaint and a sheen complaint, show the same habit: check the recipe and the process before you blame the raw material. This is Episode 11 of the Coatings Industry Training Series, based on Book Two: Raw Materials for Beginners.
