Paint Formulation for Beginners: Ep.6: When the Government Changed Everything(Lead, VOCs & Chromate)

By the early 1970s the coatings industry was running well — latex owned architectural, epoxy and polyurethane were established in industrial work, and chromate pigments were the gold standard for anti-corrosion primers. Then the government stepped in, and what followed is the most consequential forced reformulation in this industry's history. This episode covers three regulatory events that reshaped what formulators could use: the 1978 lead ban, the decades-long VOC crackdown that forced waterborne conversion across the industry, and the chromate phase-out — a replacement problem that, to be direct about it, still isn't fully solved. This is Episode 6 of the Coatings Industry Training Series, based on Book One: Paint Formulation for Beginners: No Chemistry Degree Required.
