Paint Formulation for Beginners, Ep.10 | It’s Baking, Not Alchemy: The Five Ingredients in Every Can

You didn't get hired to be a chemist. You got hired to be a really precise baker. The resin makers, pigment producers, and additive houses already did the heavy chemistry. By the time a drum shows up at your dock, the chemistry is baked in. Your job is knowing what each ingredient does, how much to use, and how it behaves alongside everything else in the can. That's a learnable skill, and it's what this part of the series is built around. This episode kicks off Book Two with the five ingredient categories in nearly every coating, then goes straight to the one that does the most work: the binder. We cover the three jobs a binder has to do, the resin families you'll actually run into as a new tech (and why polyurethane isn't on the list as its own family), solvent-based vs. waterborne, the five numbers on a resin TDS worth knowing on day one, and a worked example picking a binder for an interior steel primer. This is Episode 10 of the Coatings Industry Training Series and the first episode built on Book Two: Raw Materials for Beginners.
